Fractal Portrait Series

The goal of this project was to explore the relationship between two other individuals and myself, as well as explore my own perception of myself.  I ask each model a series of questions relating both to their relationship with me along with how they feel about themselves. The questions were not asked beforehand, but rather during the shoot to capture each reaction. For the pictures taken of myself, I had a friend ask me their own set of questions. Each answer “cuts away” a layer of the individual that they may have been keeping to themselves or exposes a facade that they have put up in reaction to their environment.

Based on the answers, I later drew organic or geometric patterns that I felt expressed both the subject's relationship with me and their own perception of themselves. I applied a pattern to each of the 10 shots I took of each subject and cut that pattern away from the portrait and stacked it over the previous one with a thin acrylic panel in between.

Having the photographs in this stacked position will create depth, distortion, and abstraction for my audience. There will be a sense of familiarity in the presence of a human face, yet enough distortion and contrast from the cut out patterns to invoke curiosity and pull the viewer closer. Overall, I would like my work to invoke curiosity. I want my pieces to stand out as more of a photograph, but perhaps less than a sculpture.
